International Year of Light final report presented to UNESCO
Paris, 3 October 2016: The Final Report of the United Nations proclaimed International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015) was presented at a special event at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris today. The report declares that 1001 Inventions, a Founding Partner of IYL 2015, engaged more than 25 million people around the world through ‘1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al-Haytham’ global educational campaign celebrating the achievements of the 11th century pioneer who was a key focus of the International Year of Light.
The final analysis in the report demonstrates that the International Year of Light has been one of the most successful and visible of UNESCO’s international observances. The reach of all IYL 2015 activities is estimated to exceed 100 million people in 147 countries worldwide. 1001 Inventions contributed to more than 25% of the worldwide outreach of the UN Year of Light with grassroots engagement strategies and a global network of partners, including UNESCO and National Geographic.
The success of ‘1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al-Haytham’ campaign is also attributed to the instrumental role of the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (FSTC), 1001 Inventions academic partner, that worked with a team of renowned scholars to develop the content for the educational campaign.
On presenting the report to UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences, John Dudley, Chair of the IYL 2015 Steering Committee, said:
“IYL 2015 has provided a timely reminder that through our commitment to education and outreach, we can really make a difference. It is now up to us to build on what we have learned and what we have accomplished during 2015 to continue to work together for the betterment of all.”
