The Ibn Al-Haytham Educational Guide includes a range of hands-on workshops and science demonstrations, with links to fantastic resources, for understanding the fundamental principles of light, optics and vision. The step-by-step activities aim to engage young people to make, design and tinker while better understanding the significant contributions of Ibn al-Haytham to our understanding of both vision and light.

2. ‘1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al Haytham’

Watch the short film ‘1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al-Haytham’. From director and producer Ahmed Salim, starring legendary actor Omar Sharif, voice by Khalid Abdalla and music composed by Sami Yusuf. The creators of ‘1001 Inventions and the Library of Secrets’ bring you this short film on the 11th century scientist Ibn al-Haytham. The film was launched during the United Nations proclaimed International Year of Light and is produced by 1001 Inventions in partnership with UNESCO.

3. National Geographic and 1001 Inventions Publish “Ibn al-Haytham” Children’s Book

Washington DC, 18th December 2015: National Geographic Kids and 1001 Inventions announced today a new partnership to publish the book “Ibn al-Haytham: The Man Who Discovered How We See” as part of the highly successful National Geographic Kids Readers Series.

The English language publication is planned for release in spring 2016.

The book is a special tribute to the 11th century pioneering scientific thinker Al-Hasan Ibn al-Haytham (known in the West by the Latinized form of his first name “Alhazen”).

4. 100 Educational Activities about Light and Photonics Booklet

The e-book 100 educational activities about Light and Photonics is a quick reference guide to freely available resource for teachers and educators. The list of activities consists of educational activities for children 6 years and older and includes material developed by Opticks4Kids,, the Optical Society, TeachEngineering and Universe Awareness, among others. The e-book is available as an Open Educational Resource and the source file is available for translations and adaptations.


These activities have been curated by the Universe Awareness Programme (UNAWE) based at Leiden University within the framework of the LIGHT2015 project to celebrate the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015).
